my whole "sent items" area of outlook disappeared. tried to run inbox repair
tool, but cannot find file name for sent items?

You mean you don't have a Sent Items folder?
Start Outlook with the resetfolders switch;
Stat-> Run; outlook.exe /resetfolders

When running the Inbox Repair Tool, note that there is no separate file for
your Sent Items folder; Outlook keeps al your items in a single pst-file.
You can see where it is located via;
File-> Data File Management...

If you are having issues finding the Inbox Repair Tool (scanpst.exe) for
your version see;

I had a sent items folder, and it is physically still there, but when i try
to open it, i get an "unknown error".

i tried the reset folders to no avail.

i can easily find the inbox repair tool, but then it asks me which file to
repair, and i have no idea what i need to put in that box? everything i have
tried, it says that there is no such file?

i looked for the file, data management, but i am snot sure where to find
that either? where can i find "file"? By the way, i am using Outlook 2007.

Thanks for your help.

Bowen 209 and the MVP experts:

I cannot wait to hear the answer to this question. This exact same thing
happened to me in OUtlook 2007 today. I had items in the Sent Items folder
when I first opened Outlook 2007 this morning, and now that folder is empty.
When I open the .PST folder that is supposed to contain the most recent
"archive" (which for some reason is dated today, although I have Outlook set
to run every 60 days and it ran 6/25/09), it opens a second "Personal
Folders" folder, with "Sent Items" as a subfolder - which is also empty.
There are only two items in that "Personal Folder" in the "Inbox" - two
emails with time stamps dated January 2007!

This is bizarre. Any malware out there that can delete Sent Items contents?

Thanks for all your help - LBRT
