sending "works" email won't open.. needs "word"...can I convert

When I send email file from WORKS WORD PROCESSOR, reciepient states unable to
open. He suggests WORD format. How can I send/ convert files formats so as to
send. I have Windows XP and my Word format was temporary(came installed on
computer- SONY VIO PCG-K25) and has expired.
