sending photos as attachments

Please help me (not familiar with windows mail)
Have followed instrucions in help menu, it says after you select the photos
and size etc, windows should then open a new email for me - it doesn't, if I
open a new one, there is no attachment there.
If I try to attach the way I am used to with outlook express (by selecting,
then send to/mail recipient), I can not make the pictures smaller.
What am I doing wrong? I am sure it should be easier than this.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

1. Open Windows Photo Gallery.
2. Select the picture(s).
3. Click "E-mail" on the toolbar.
The rest is self-evident.
