When I click on a link in a web page to contact by e-mail, the message,
'could not perform this operation because the default mail client is not
properly installed' is shown.
I've done all I can to set the defaults etc for windows mail, but it still
won't create the message...... any suggestions?

Control Panel | Programs | Make a file open in a specific program.
Scroll all the way down to protocols and make Windows Mail the default for
MAILTO

Open the Default Programs applet, which you can access either from
the Start menu or via the Control Panel, then click the first item:
"Set your default programs."
After a few seconds, a list of programs comes up. Click on Windows
Mail. If it doesn't respond with "This program has all its defaults"
then fix it by clicking on the option indicated by the first green arrow.

Incidentally, there is no program named "explorer". To avoid confusion
use the correct name, either Internet Explorer (the web browser), or
Windows Explorer (the file manager).

Thanks for the assistance, but I had already done that..... I discovered that
I had to change Windows Mail from being the default program and then make it
the default program all over again before it worked properly.
I apologise for not using the correct name of 'Internet Explorer'

Sorry, that just didn't make sense to me!

Click Start.
Click Control Panel.
Click Programs.
Click "Make a file open in a specific program" under Default Programs.
Scroll all the way down to protocols and make Windows Mail the default for
MAILTO.

Sometimes you have to 'toggle' a setting back and forth a few
times before it sticks.
