Sending emails mystery

On occasion, when I click send/receive, it displays that a certain number of
emails are being sent, despite the fact that I have no emails to send. I
have anti-virus software and a firewall and I have run ad-aware and spybot to
rid my PC of unwanted visitors, but the problem remains. Any further
theories?

You're probably sending read-receipts for messages that you've read. Go to
Tools -> Options -> Email Options -> Tracking Options to change your
read-receipt handling if you wish.
