What operating system? If using XP you can right click on a picture using
windows explorer and it will give you the option to e-mail it at original or
smaller size

Here's a 'one-size-fits-all' way to do this.

1. Go to www.irfanview.com download and install Irfanview graphics viewer.

2. Open the pic you wish to send in irfanview.Make sure you can see all
the picture.

3. In IMAGE menu, select RESIZE/RESAMPLE

4. Click on HALF in dimensions, right hand top of dialogue box

5. Click OK and check size of image. Keep doing this till you have the
right size. (or you can try 640x480 size)

6. Very important. Once you have the image size you want, go to file
menu and click save or save as. Choose type: jpg. At the bottom tick
'show options dialog' and click ok.

7. In the right hand pop-up select image quality - higher means bigger
file.

8. Hit SAVE and the pic should be ready to email in the size you can see
it.

Good luck.

Know your formats. jpg, gif, png all save a lot of filespace
over bmp but have different strengths and weaknesses.

Sorry for not providing additional information but, I am using jpeg on OS
XP. Will bmp be much better?

No, bmp is the worst for size, being lossless. jpg is best
quality for lossy with color-depth, gif is better for lossy with
few colors. Not sure what png's strengths are, but sometimes it
weighs in less than gif.

All three formats are adjustable. When you save an image, go to
advanced properties where you can set the loss rate.

Other things you can do to reduce filesize is crop the image and
reduce its physical size. I think you mentioned Irfanview; it
does both of those functions.

Jim,
If you are using a digital camera to create the pics read the camera's
manual. There is a setting which determines the size of the pic. The
highest setting is for a pic you want to hang on your wall having had it
processed by a photo shop. The lowest setting, the one that allows you
to take the most number of pics on your camera, is the one you use to
send via e-mail.
Best,
POKO

I'm using XP and have tried your suggestion but, have not been able to find
the e-mail option - do you do this with the photo as an attachment - could
you please expand?

Jim

Open Windows Exlporer, locate the picture that you want to send, right click on the file and choose "Send To", and then choose "Mail Recipient". Another window will then pop up asking whether you want to make your pictures smaller or keep the original size. Make your selection and click OK. After you've clicked OK, your email program will open with the picture ready to send, just add the recipients address and click on Send. HTH
