Sending email failure - away from home

Ed Gomez

Using Microsoft Outlook, I can't send email when I'm away from
home. It appears that a setting isn't set correctly re: the outgoing
mail server. I'm receiving email without a problem. Can you help ?
Thank you.

Who is your ISP and do they support an alternative means of sending mail
when you connect to someone else's network?

My ISP is Charter (charter.net) and when I called them, they said that
since I could send and receive mail via their web mail, I should be able
to do it also with Outlook. We reviewed the settings and they didn't find
a problem. All of my folders / email is on Outlook, so I would prefer that.

As I mentioned, my ISP is Charter and they said I should be able to
send email via Outlook (as far as they are concerned). For your reference
the error get is "Task (e-mail address removed)" - sending reported error
(0x800CCC67): The server responded: 421 charter.net connection refused from
(207.189.196.214). I hope this helps .. Thank you.

It does and what they are not telling you is that you have to be on their
network and not someone elses in order to send main. (means no sitting in a
Disney hotel, Starbucks wi-fi hotspot, AOL, .etc and hoping to use Charter's
SMTP server of smtp.charter.net as your outbound mail server in mail
client.)

More or less, they are saying that if you are traveling, you need to use
their web access for mail.

Have you thought about getting a free e-mail account at Gmail or some other
place so that you can use them as your SMTP server when traveling?

I've double checked with Charter support and they insist Microsoft Outlook
should work with their outgoing server (smtp.charter.net) and that Microsoft
may have to configure something to make sure that works (the incoming server
is (pop.charter.net). Make sense ? or not ?

Gosh .. other than signing in with my normal email address and
password, I don't know of anything else that I've done.

How are you authenticating to their server?

I have the same problem with RoadRunner. Was told the same thing - you can't
send e-mail if you are off their network. Have to use webmail. I get the
"can't log on to SMTP server" error message. Tried putting in my username
password on the Outlook advanced settings, but to no avail.

As Charter this very specific question....

Hi Support,

I will be traveling the next couple of weeks and I want to know if I will be
able to send e-mail thru smtp.charter.net when I'm connected to a foreign
network (e.g. Hyatt Hotel, Starbucks wi-fi hotspot, .etc)? If it is
possible, do I have to meet some special criteria like checking my pop3
account first or authenticating to smtp.charter.net or order to send
messages thru your SMTP server(s)?

Thanks
Ed

Depending on how they answer the above will really help you figure out how
to configure your POP3/SMTP account while traveling.

Ouch ! Sounds like there isn't much we can do then. I was really hoping we
could find a way by adjusting the settings on the Microsoft Outlook side.

Ed Gomez,
You might want to try changing the outgoing mail server (SMTP) port setting
for your Charter acct from the default of 25, to one of the following.
587
465 (Comcast recommends this port if the PC is used while traveling, and
hooking up to hotel Wi-Fi service).
995

Comcast has started to block Port 25 for some areas of the country and
individuals, and require them to use port "587" (w/o) quotes. Charter.net
may be requiring the same for certain parts of the country or individuals.

I have the exact same problem with Charter as you do, I'm in Michigan. I
have tried changing the ports to no avail. A lot of ISP's have started to no
longer support POP and SMTP, hopefully Charter is not one of them.
