sending document

i have sent some documents in word 2003 and at the receiving end, they are
garbled with formatting marks. i open before i send, and don't see anything
but text. help, advice? h.
 
Does the recipient have nonprinting characters displayed? Or perhaps you're
referring to markup (tracked changes)?
