send/receive in outlook 2003

Receive in outlook takes minutes rather than seconds even when there aren't
any new messages. This is very annoying especially as we still haven't
resolved the constant request for passwords.Have set up new profiles but that
doesn't work.We have the problem of slow send/receive on Vista and xp both
using Outlook 2003.I have uninstalled Norton but that hasn't helped.

The polling interval is not less than 10 mins?
You are using a unicode data file?
You have run scanpst.exe on the data file?
And if you start OL using the safe switch, how does it behave?
Run> outlook.exe /safe

I'm assuming pop mail account, since you dont say

Polling is 10 minutes.Using pop3,
Sorry don't know about unicode data file how do I find out.
Have followed Microsoft instruction for 'safe mode' in Vista.
ie: CLICK START,type outlook.exe/safe in start search box and enter.it
searches and says it can't find a match! Windows doesn't appear to have 'run'
I am not a computer expert and am struggling

Sorry, forgot the Vista bit;
Start>All Programs>Accesseries>Run
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11\Outlook.exe " /safe
Assuming that is the path

If this is a new install with a new data file it would be a unicode file,
unless you specifically created an old format one. Its possible, if you are
using a data file copied from an earlier version outlook, it will be the old
format
Did you run scanpst.exe on the data file?
