Send/Receive fail with Exchange

G

Guest

Hi,
I notice that if the same Outlook user is logged onto two or more computers,
only the first one to connect to Exchange will have a functioniong
Send/Receive. Is this normal behavior or is there some setting that controls
this?

In particular:
1. Pressing the Send/Receive button has no affect.
2. Can not open the Send/Receive groups Ctrl+Alt+S.

Hi Bob,

Based on my knowledge and test, if the account is set to Exchange mode,
then it does not matter if the user is logged onto two or more computers.
The Send/Receive is supposed to work without a problem. Please try the
following suggestion to troubleshoot this issue:

* Check E-mail Delivery Location
=============

This issue may occur if the default delivery location is set to personal
folders. To check this option, follow the steps below:

1. On the Tools menu, click E-mail Accounts.
2. Click View or change existing e-mail accounts, and then click Next.
3. In the Deliver new e-mail to the following location list, make sure that
Mailbox - <username> is selected.
4. Click Finish.
5. Quit and restart Microsoft Outlook.

If the suggestion does not work, please do the following two tests and tell
me the test results:

* Test 1: Outlook Safe Mode
===========

Outlook Safe Mode can narrow down issues which are caused by any
extensions, corrupted resources, files, registries, or templates.

1. Click Start | Run.
2. In the Open box, type: "Outlook /safe" (without the quotation marks).
Notes: There is a space character between Outlook and the forward slash (/).
3. Click OK.

* Test 2: Start Windows in Safe Mode with network connection
===========

1. Exit all applications and restart your system.
2. Long press F8 key at the boot sequence of Windows to invoke the Startup
menu.
3. Choose Safe Mode with network connection and press Enter.

When Windows is started in Safe Mode, determine if this scenario is gone.

Also please help us collect more information for further research:

* Information Collection
=================

1. What are the versions of your Windows and Office? Have you applied all
the latest updates?
2. If you log out the user on the first workstation, and then log in on the
second one, can you send/receive now?
3. Does this also occur on any other Outlook profiles that log on this
problematic machine? Please create a new Outlook profile to test.

Hi Leon,

I've done your three tests and it still fails.

However, I have noticed the following:

If the first user closes Outlook, the second user will now be allowed to
send/receive. If the first user starts Outlook again, it will not be allowed
to send/receive (as the second user now has this function). In other words,
the first Outlook to connect to Exchange has full function and all subsequent
user connections can not send/receive. The moment the full function session
disconnects from Exchange, the next user will immediately gain full function.

In another scenario, I find that this only seems to affect users when they
are both using console sessions. If one user is a terminal services session
and the other is a console session, then both users can send/receive.

Note that although the second user can not send/receive, Outlook will still
synchronize with Exchange in all scenarios.

It seems to me that Exchange must be the culprit.

Hi Bob,

Based on my test, the second console session user should use Outlook
without a problem. I have done a lot of research, and still cannot find any
useful information regarding your issue.

In this situation, please check the option of "Cached Exchange Mode" to
test this issue again:

1. Use console session to log on and start Outlook.
2. Click Tools>Email Accounts
3. Select View or change existing e-mail accounts and click Next.
4. Double click on your Exchange Server
5. Check the status of Use Cached Exchange Mode. If it is not checked, then
check it and test. If it is already checked, please uncheck it and test
again.

What is the test result?

Hi Leon,
Sorry it took so long on getting back to you.
I tired your procedure and found it doesn't make any difference if cached
exchange mode is enabled or not. I did notice however that when cache
exchange mode is disabled, my outlook.ost file is being updated regardless
(per date/time stamp).

You need not investigate this any further as it isn't that big of a deal to
me. I've another installation that I can see if the same symptoms occure
their also. Thanks for your efforts!

Leon,

I am having a problem with my Free/Busy information not being updated to my
Outlook server at work. It worked fine up until a few weeks ago and now,
nothing. I tried the process of going to <Tools:Send/Receive:Free/Busy
Information>, but the option is grayed out.

Any reasons as to why this is happening?
