Sending the same request twice within a minute seldom helps.

See here:

The instructions were written for Outlook Express, but should also
work under Windows Mail as long as they don't call for the HTTP
protocol.

Mediacom told me that their system does not support the new version
outlook express. I got those messages when I installed it.

Outlook Express won't run under Vista. If you mean Windows Mail
instead, keep reading.

See here for the instructions for setting up a new account:

<http://www.mchsi.com/help/read/publisher_02/2002-01-15.33>

These instructions were written for Outlook Express, but likely
to work under Windows Mail also if you use the Reconfiguration
of Outlook Express option and if they don't call for the HTTP
protocol.

Mediacom is lying to you. Their mail server can't tell if you are using
Outlook Express or Windows Mail, or any other email program.
The POP3 protocol that is used for communications with the mail
servers is standardized and universal.

The error message you quoted appears to be from someone named "john".
Unless that is you, we need to see *your* error message.
