Send and recieve on startup

Send and recieve on startup is checked, but I still have to to manually
click on send/receive to retrieve mail. It will do it automatically on
startup the first time after booting up but after that, if I close mail and
open it again later, it has to be done manually.

Do you have "Check for new messages every xx minutes" checked?

I have the same problem. I have "Send and recieve messages at startup" and
"Check for new messages every..." checked. This does not work!

Wait for Windows Mail's replacement to be released in the next 9 days.
