sempron Vs older athlon xp

vinny

I need to replace my old athlon xp 1600 at 266 front side bus. I was
looking at the sempron 2500 socket A at 333 front side bus. I was happy
with my athlon xp but it died. I play some older games (rarely new ones}
and I have a geforce 4 ti 4400. how would a sempron 2500 compare to an old
athlon xp 1600

thanks

Vinny

Sempron 1.75 mhz
XP about 1.4 mhz

So the Sempron is faster, otherwise they are similar.

Be sure your board can use the Sempron. It may take a BIOS update. Check the
web site under cpu compatibility.

Both the Palomino (180nm) 1600+ and Thoroughbred B (130nm) 1600+ operate
at 1400MHz, and both have 256KB L2 cache.

In comparison, the Sempron 2500+ (130nm) operates at 1750MHz, also has a
256KB L2 cache, but has more memory bandwidth from running at 333FSB as
opposed to the 266FSB Athlon XP 1600+.

Your motherboard will need to support 333FSB processors, and you'll need
at least PC2700 DDR. If your motherboard doesn't support higher than
266FSB, you're better off with one of these: http://tinyurl.com/7slee .

Both running at stock speeds, the Sempron would equate to about a 2100+
XP. See Sempron in link below. You also need a MB that supports a minimum
166MHz FSB (333FSB) for the Sempron to even run at stock speed. Running at
133MHz FSB it would equate to about a the same as a 1600+ XP and would be
a waste IMO. Your best bet would be an XP-M if you are buying new. Can't
really give you the best advice since I don't know what MB, Ram, etc. you
have. It all makes a difference. To be safe, I'd say get a real Athlon XP
2400+ for about $7 more or even a Duron 1800 fro about $20 less. For more
performance, a Barton core XP-M would be my choice for about $75.

Are you sure it won't run the memory slower than the bus?

It' s vinny again. thanks for the replies. I should have clarified that I
am getting also a compatible budget motherboard. (ecs km 400 m2 3.0) and I
have 512mb of pc 2700 memory.
as far as the athlon xp. I would need to get the retail version since it
has 3 year warranty. my old athlon xp and motherboard just went bad.
thanks

It all depends on the motherboard. If the OP's entire system was built
around the release time of his Athlon XP 1600+ and Ti4400, then the
motherboard is less likely to have an asynchronous bus option.

If you are going to have to buy both a MB and CPU, get a socket 754 or
socket 939 board. Socket A is a dead horse. Let it be. You can get a 754
MB and cpu for about the same rpice with much better performance and you
can still use your PC2700 ram. S754 MB with onboard video $50. S754
retail Sempron 2600 about $66. Now that can't be more than $20 more than
than the socket A setup and it will be a lot faster, and more upgradable
cpu wise. Although you can overclock the heck out of 754 Semprons.

I have an antec sl350 powersupply an does not have the extra 4 pin power
connector (only the 20 pin). all socket754 i saw require it. I am better
off getting the atlonxp Barton 2800 retail for 34 dollars more than getting
a different power supply

You can get an adapter for the 4 pin connector so don't use that for an
excuse.:) Some newer K7 boards also require the 4 pin connector.
