Does anyone really know the legal ramifications of selling a PC
with the operating system installed? I have removed the other
applications, but wonder what issues exist since I registered the
upgrade from Windows 98 to XP (when I installed the upgrade.)
If you are selling a PC with Windows XP installed - you just need to make
sure you sell the CD or the restoration method that came with said system
with it. In this case - you must give the person buying it your Windows 98
media (or method to restore to Windows 98) and the Windows XP Upgrade CD and
Product Key you used to upgrade the system.
If they are smart - when they get the computer - they will use their Windows
98 CD and Windows XP Upgrade CD to perform a CLEAN installation of Windows
XP by booting with the Windows XP Upgrade CD and inserting the qualifying
media (Windows 98 installation CD) when it asks them to. That way they have
a clean system - all their own.
Registration does nothing.
Activation is what matters.
And as long as that copy of Windows XP activates - there is no problem.
