Selective Start Up Question

I use selective start up on all our computers (run,
msconfig, etc.) to disable many of the unnecessary
processes that seem to be installed by so many
applications. When I start our computers we get the usual
note that says I am using the selective startup utility.
I can click the box so it will not show me that message
every time but when reading the message carefully it
indicates that if I do the selective startup utility will
not start the next time I boot the computer. Does this
mean that if check the "do not bug me again" box that the
utility will not run and therefore all the unwanted
processes that I have unchecked in the startup tab will
run? If so does that mean that I will have to see and
click through that annoying message every time I boot?
Cam you shed some light on this unclear message and how
this works? I find that when asking others I get
differing opinions.
Tnx

I think you got it right - as long as msconfig has disabled a startup item
then you get the irritating reminder on boot-up.

Take a look at StartupCPL freeware from
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml - does a similar job but no pop-up
message box on boot-up.

Martin.

Hi Dan,

If the runkey is listed here, delete it:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current
Version\Run\MSConfig

Or run this edit:

Stop the Selective Startup Screen (Line 173)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To remove disabled items under msconfig/startup:

Clear Disabled Items from Msconfig Startup (Line 148)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Or...

For items that were in the Start menu, Programs, Startup folder:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupfolder.
You'll find a subkey for each disabled item.

For items loaded from the Registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg.
Again, you'll find a subkey for each disabled item.

No - it just means that the run that comes up with that message and lets
you check things again will not come up.

Note that if you just run msconfig and OK out, you will get this next
time - if you just want to take a look, exit by using Cancel
