Selective sound loss

All my sounds work except Windows Startup and shutdown and email notification
sounds. All sounds work in Control panel though, and no apparent conflicts
in device manager.

Using integrated sound, but problem persists even with new generic sound
card after disabling integrated sound.

Any help appreciated.

As a follow up, I wonder if there is a way tfor intalling the sound devices
only back in the registry without a complete re-installing of Win XP?
