In Word 2003, I can select a line of text by moving my pointer to the left
(or right) of the line until it changes to a right-pointing arrow, and then
doing left click. I want to disable this feature. What I want to happen
instead is for the cursor to simply move to the beginning (or to the end) of
the line (like what happens in notepad). How can I do this?

You can click just to the left of the first character--or press Home to go
to the beginning of the line.

Thanks for replying, but I really want to disable that feature
(auto-selecting of the whole line). For this feature, I want Word to behave
like notepad --- the cursor should just appear wherever I click, and that
auto-selecting should not happen.

Any other suggestions?

There is no way to do this. If you click at the left end of the line, you
will put the insertion point there. But if you click to the left of the end
of the line, you will select the line. That's the way Word works, and there
is no way to change it. If you are not satisfied with this, then use Notepad
instead.
