Selecting 3+ text boxes in Word

Word 2003 won't allow me to select more than 2 text boxes using the SHIFT key
like my old Word did. How can I change that?
 
Is it possible that some of the boxes are _inside_ a Drawing Canvas and the
others _aren't_?

That one drove me crazy when it first came around. If that's it, you might
want to go to Tools>Options>General & remove the check to 'Automatically
create...canvas'.

Thank you! Yes, they are in a drawing canvas, which is really annoying. I'm
glad I can turn that thing off!
