Sees network sometimes but never the internet

I have 4 Dell Computers with Windows XP Home on them and one Compaq
with Win
XP on it. Several times each one of the computers has lost contact
with the
network. I have tried everything to get them to see the network.
Sometimes
they see the other peer to peer computers, but don't go on to the
internet.
The next time they might get the internet, but cant see the other
computers.
Sometimes you can't get them to see anything but themselves on the
network. I have uninstalled the network card, software, and reset the
DSL
and the HUB and this never seems to work. Sometimes if you leave them
turned off over the weekend they will log back on to the network like
nothing ever happened. I have gone as far as buying new network cards
and
installing them to get the computers back on the network. The
troubleshooter shows the cards are working perfectly, but they're not
seeing
the internet or the network.

The way our system is set up, we have a DSL connection running to a 16
port
hub. 12 to 14 computers are hooked to this hub. 9 of the computers
are
running windows 98 and never seem to have any problems, but the 5 XP
machines are the ones that take turns having the problems. Mine, the
compaq,
quit seeing the network last week. I finally gave up and put a new
PCI
network card in it and disabled the internal network card. It has
been
running great for the last week. Even with the replaced network cards
they
will sometimes lose connection to the internet and network.

Also all the computers are fixed to search for an ip address on login.
None of them have a static IP address.

Anyone have any idea what is going wrong with these machines? I have
one right now that I have tried everything on; I can get it to see the
network (sometimes) but can't ever get it on the internet or checking
e-mail.

John

I appreciate any help I can get.
