Hi. I have a fresh install of Windows XP, most things appear to be fine,
including the modem, but when I attempt to connect to the internet I recieve
the error message "Error 633, the modem is already in useor is not configured
properly".

I've read several suggestions elsewhere that a utility called rarepair.exe
might solve this particular problem, only it doesn't seem to be widely
available for download.

A long shot I know, but if somebody could email it to me, or post a link,
I'd much appreciate it. Thanks for your time

What would be better than looking for some utility is to determine if
your modem drivers are correct and/or if the modem is operating
correctly. A good way to test if the modem hardware is actually working
is to use Hyperterminal (Start>Programs>Accessories>Communications or
install it through additional Windows Components in Add/Remove
Programs). Use Hyperterminal to call a different telephone number than
the one to which the modem is connected - a cell phone for instance. If
the modem does not dial the cell phone properly, either the drivers are
not installed correctly or are not installed or the hardware itself is
not working. Looking for a utility won't solve this.

What modem do you have? Is the computer an OEM machine like a Dell? And
of course, not meaning to hurt your feelings, but you do have the modem
cable plugged in the right opening, yes? Not the one that has the
picture of the telephone?

Hi, thanks for the response. It's not an OEM PC. I've
tried a couple of modems, and Intel 536EP and a Conexant
HFC v90, both of which work in a previous Win ME
installation (handily ghosted beforehand), and are
reported as appearing to be working in device manager, but
no attempt is made to dial up, the error message appears
immediately when I try to establish a connection.
Certainly for the Intel modem the drivers appear to be
correct (though I did try a few driver versions).

I'll try what you suggest in hyperterminal, other than
that maybe another clean install might be worth a try.

Thanks again for your time

I certainly wouldn't reinstall the operating system for this! Here are
some other things to try:

1. Is the modem seen in Device Manager?
2. Does it answer a query by Windows?
3. If the answer to #1 and #2 is yes, then swap out the flat cable with
a new one and test with Hyperterminal.
4. If #1 and #2 are good but Hyperterminal says there is no dialtone,
attach the modem cable to a different telephone jack. Also, make sure
the telephone jack you are using actually works. Test this with a
regular telephone.

If you know the telephone jack is OK, go to the store and buy a new
modem for under $25usd and install it.

If someone wants a copy of rarepair.exe... they can email me and I will
send it to you in a zip file with the .exe extension renamed to .ex_
