SEEK: Utility to easily change file asociation

L

Lars

Am looking for a utility to quickly change a file association in XP.
What utilities would you recommend to do this?

At the moment I use the File Types tab in Folder Options and locate
the file extension. Or use the context menu for a file of a
particular type. Then I choose one of the shortlisted programs but
often I have to browse to where the application program is.

QuickAssociation from PC Mag (pay to join) looks as if it might be
good. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1639699,00.asp
I can't find it on FileMirrors.com or FindSearching.com. Does anyone
have a link to a free download?

What other utilities would you recommend to do this?

This app creates a shortlist for a file extension which it offers in
the context menu.

On my XP Pro this doesn't seem to work correctly: it creates an
OpenExpert entry in the file type which can only be enabled as the
default by actually going into Folder Options > File Type > Advanced
(if Advanced is still available).

Maybe it's an XP Pro issue.

If one includes the need to Open Expert then this process takes even
longer than the usual way!

If you continually need to fix or change a few associations, a REG file is
the quickest and handiest way. Download a "default associations" REG file
from www.blackviper.com, copy and edit the REG file to reflect your own
associations. It may take 20-30 minutes, but from that point on changing
associations back and forth only take a second.

Hi Lars,

Open Expert is working fine here on Win XP Pro, SP2.
Looks like the installation messed things up, maybe a reinstall would help.

My personal favourite is Context Edit v1.1, another PC Mag program.
However, try this direct download link (it worked for me about 9 months
ago ).
