I was recently was prompted to download a Windows XP security update. After
I did so, the computer would no longer boot properly and I receive this error
message at start up:

Explorer.exe-entry point not found
The procedure entry point SHCreateThreadRef could not be located in the
dynamic link library Shlwapi.dll

I found information about this error on Microsoft's website and followed
their protocol for accessing the Task Manager and removing the hotfix
(KB834707). It suggested removal of service pack 2 which I did not find in
the list of programs. I also tried to remove it through the Task Manager
using %windir%\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\spuninst.exe as suggested.
This also did not work.

Once the computer finishes trying to boot, I see the wallpaper but no icons,
folders, start menu--nothing.

I cannot get around the problem in Safe Mode either....

Any ideas?!

In Add / Remove Programs did you scroll down the list after clicking on
Change or Remove Programs.

Did you try Method 1 and Method 2 under More Information of this
Article? With what result?
You receive an "Explorer.EXE - Entry Point Not Found - The procedure
entry point SHCreateThreadRef could not be located in the dynamic link
library Shlwapi.dll" error message after you install the MS04-038
security update

Hi--yes, I attempted to follow those instructions also--SX SP2 was not listed
under Add/Remove programs and I have no access to the Start menu to follow
the remaining instructions. However, using command prompt, I am told that
the machine has SP1.

Thanks anyway,
C
