I am told this update is only required for multi-lingual purposes. My
computer automatically installs all MS updates and this one will not allow
Outlook to open after it is installed. I have had to unhappily turn auto
update feature off so that this particular update does not get downloaded. I
don't even need it as I don't use any other language than English. Can anyone
tell me how I can have auto updates on and NOT download this one?

You should be able to permanently decline the update via Microsoft Update.
Once you do that, the automatic updates client will pickup on that action
and stop pulling the update all together.

I will try that. Thank you

I have just done that and MS Update keeps saying it is a "High Priority"
update to stop malicious code via e-mails. Scaring the hell out of me. Is
this really only for non-english versions? and if it is, why does it want me
to download it?

No and afaik, it applies to all language versions.

Since you say the install is failing using Microsoft Update/Automatic
Updates, you can manually download the update via
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...43-B041-4305-8442-3C4E3B832788&displaylang=en
(you want the link to office2003-kb892843-fullfile-enu.exe and its about
8.5mb)

This way you can run it interactively. If the install fails, then I can
suggest we look at the patch install log to determine why it is giving you
grief.

Sorry, it is not the install itself that fails. Outlook refuses to open once
the install itself is installed.

ah... does outlook start in safe mode?

Start > Run > outlook.exe /safe > ok button

by the way... did you reboot the workstation after applying this update?
(if you didn't, please do)

It offers the option of safe mode but never quite gets there. And yes I do
reboot and also when I go to Contro Panel Add/Remove to remove the update I
have to reboot to get rid of the update. Then all is working but of course I
don't have the "High Priority" update. Very annoying and thanks for all your
replies so far.

Couple of thoughts at this point.

1) Assuming you are running Windows 2000/XP, does Outlook start under
operating system username?

2) Have you tried creating a new mail profile via the mail profile in the
control panel. (do not delete the existing one and create a new one with the
same name. just create a new one and switch to it to rule out any oddities
in the registry in regards to the mail profile.)

3) Are there any warning/error messages in the event logs that might give a
hint as to why Outlook isn't starting?

1) It is XP Professional. I am the only user
2) No I haven't but if I created new mail profile wouldn't I have to create
a new OS user as well? And wouldn't this potentially add problems to the
registry?
3)I don't know were these event logs are. Sorry.

Start with one first because it is the easiest to do. If you can, create a
new user account for Windows XP and create a dummy account in Outlook just
see if it will start. This will help isolate the problem to machine vs user
account. When done, you can delete the temporary user account.

Ok, I created a new user and then took the updates. Configured with dummy
mail account and it opened fine. I then switched user back to me and of
course the updates are installed now and Outlook refused to open. I then
switched to 2nd user again and it Outlook hung. I rebooted and logged back on
as me.Tried to open Outlook and it said it had failed and asked if I wanted
Safe Mode, I tried and failed to start in Safe Mode. Rebooted again, and it
said it had failed in Safe Mode would I like Detect and Repair option. I said
yes and allowed it to try this. It went through and finished but outlook
failed to open again. Interesting point to note here, at this point I went to
Add/Remove to get rid of the updates but they were not there!
I had no option but to restore system to earlier point and configure Auto
Update to ignore this particular update. Back at square one I'm afraid.

Message for neo,

Thank you for all your help. I have solved the problem. It seems having
Norton Anti-Virus installed was the bugbear.
I have also been trying to get Skype and searching for my problem on their
help blogs it seems others couldn't get it because of Norton. So I
uninstalled (it was due to expire next week anyway) and successfully got
Skype to work.
I then installed the Outlook updates too and they work as well!
