I keep getting this update, but when I try to update I get a message that
tells me it can't be installed. I have tried to do the information that is
given for this update, but it still won't update. I keep getting the little
emblem on my tast bar to update, but can't seem to get it to update, after
trying everything and reading and doing all the suggestions that I can find.

Do you have installed the Windows Install Cleanup utility? If there is an
entry for SQL Server 2005 remove it using the Install Cleanup tool but leave
all other entries alone. You will then have to reinstall SQL Server 2005 and
try again to apply the update. Please turn off your anti-virus software
temporarily while reinstalling and restart Windows XP as needed.

I have Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact
Edition (ENU) in my Add Remove Programs, but that is the only place I can
find anything to do with any SQL Server 2005. I have a Windows Installer
Clean Up Tool that has the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition (ENU) in
it. Should I remove that from the list? Then after I have removed it do I
immediately reinstall it by going to Microsoft.com to reinstall it? I hate to
seem so stupid, but I have never run into anything like this before. I have
always been able to update any programs without any trouble in the 15+ years
I have had a computer.
Thanks for your help,
Kay Rickard

I also have Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (MSSMLBIZ). Didn't see
this when I wrote the first response to you.

If there is no entry in the Windows Installer Cleanup for SQL Server 2005
and only an entry for SQL Server Compact Edition then you do not need to use
the Installer Cleanup tool at all. Simply uninstall SQL Server 2005 Express
Edition and then reinstall it from the website. It should contain the SP2
update if it applies. Then you should be able to apply the update if it is
still needed.
