security center gui incomplete

Hi all, I've had this issue for about a month now.

Here's a screen shot of my problem:

I've tried everything I can think of to fix it, ranging from replacing the
DLLs with known good copies to a complete repair of the OS. This morning I
even re-installed SP2.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Do you have an anti-virus application installed?

Did you format & reinstall Windows XP (SP2) or just reinstall SP2?

Had you just recently installed SP2 for the first time?

Here's a detailed breakdown of what happened:

1. Microsoft released a new mini service pack, called SP2c. It doesn't do
much other than add to the range of accepted license keys. Only system
builders, such as where I work, need the service pack, which is why most
people probably haven't heard of it. The service pack is built into the OS
install disk, not as a stand-alone installer.

2. I built a new PC for my desk and used the SP2c disk to install XP.

3. I noticed Security Center has the current problem. (BTW, the service
works fine, just the graphics are missing)

4. To the best of my memory, here's the list of things I've attempted, not
it any order:

Repaired using both the SP2C disk and a typical SP2 disk

Replaced wscsvc.dll and wscui.cpl in Windows\system32 with known good
copies, from windows\system32\dllcache and from another PC without the
problem. I had to boot to safe-mode for this. I noted that the original
files, the files that came from the SP2C disk, have a newer modified date,
meaning MS changed them.

Scoured the registry for anything that seems wrong, comparing it to another
PC's registry. I found nothing out of place.

A system restore won't do anything because the problem has been present
since the first install.

Searched and searched the internet for another poor soul who has this
problem. I have a hard time believing I'm the first to find it, but I've
found nothing.


I believe that's everything I tried, but I'm not certain.

Mike, I have this exact problem and posted the same question, but no one
responded. I have just learned that the problem is caused by installing
the latest IDT Audio Driver on an Intel DG33TL motherboard. When I
removed the IDT drivers/application, the SC window returned to normal.

Please let me know if you have a similar experience.

I'm fully aware of what WinXP SP2c is. All you told us in your first post
was that you'd "reinstalled SP2".

Did you get the machine fully patched at Windows Update /immediately/ after
installing WinXP SP2c? Has the Windows Firewall been enabled at all times?

That did the trick. I don't have that particular board, but I am using an
Intel board with that sound controller.

I installed the older driver that came on a CD with the motherboard. The
sound card works, and the SC problem goes away. There is obviously a
problem with Intel's latest driver.

Thanks for letting me know. I rebuilt a computer trying to get rid of
the problem only to have it crop up again at the last minute.
