Securing Pictures on Web pages

G

Guest

Am using Frontpage 2000 and created a personal web site. Using FrontPage
built in Picture galary capabilities, the pitures are made available on the
web.

a) How do i secure these pictures so that people cannot copy them or down
load them?

Not possible, as all web content must download to the PC to be viewed, an a determine user will get
them no matter what you try to do to stop them. If the photo are that valuable, do not put them on
the web. The best you can do is watermark them with your copyright notice or domain name.

About the only way is to shut down your site. You can thumbnail the
pictures and password protect the page, but then the visitor can only
see the thumbnail without the password and user name.

That still doesn't protect the images, once you have the login, you can still copy the images.

Add the "dontsteal" attribute to your <img donsteal="donsteal"> tags. That
will be as effective as any other solution you may be offered.

I prefer the taser attribute -

<img taser="true"...

which will fire 70K volts through the mouse when someone right clicks.... 8)

How about putting up pictures of only mother in laws.

Cookoonest - Thanks. The script is what i was looking for. This may not
secure it 100% but will keep people away from copying it. Can i use some
password capability so that some users are allowed to copy?

Can people can look at "history" files and get the image?

Thanks!!

Cookoonest - is there a way to stop the "icon" which comes up with the option
of "print / save / etc) when a picture is displayed?

R

Ronx

No, it only marks you as an amateur. There are many ways to get round that
script:
1) turn off JavaScript
2) File->Save Page as - this will save ALL the images on the page
3) The image is always downloaded to the browser cache - view the Temporary
Internet Files and copy from there
4) View->Source and get the image location directly.
5) Print Screen

and so on.

You CAN NOT protect images on the web.

You do not need a password to copy images - but you could place all your
images in a password protected folder (subweb with unique permissions) -
but then no-one will even see them unless they have the password.

It doesn't stop it 1%.

They can look in the local browser's cache and get it. Or they can turn off
javascript and get it. Or they can use a Mac and get it. Or they can do a
screen print and get it. Or, or, or, or, or,.....

<img donsteal="donsteal"> is easier to type and, in the end, just as
effective.

But, thanks anyway.

My ten year old daughter found a way around that. Hover over the picture and
it will tell you something like http://www.yourwebsite.com/mary.jpg which
you just put in the address field and bingo, you can steal the image.

And, if that doesn't work, just right click, go to properties and it will
tell you where it is.

Interesting that cookoonest rates more credibility, in your book, than the 5

When looking for pie in the sky, some tend to go with the one holding the

Bob and other who have answered / suggested a fair amount of recommendations
- Thanks.

Bob - For some odd reason the tag you have mentioned did not work - i will
check again and see.

But what amazes me is that with the level of sophistications / security
improvements in internet we are still facing such in-capabilities.

However I have seen some sites where it simply does not allow you to copy
images.....
