secure sites

Hi,
Can access interner sites no problem, problem is when I try to enter secure
web site, ie. bank, hotmail acc. etc. no go.
Are my settings wrong,? just installed AVG, dont know if this has anything
to do with it.
It tells me I'm not connected to internet, which I am, entered wrong
password etc. -no-
Any ideas?
