secure dbase conversion

I'm attempting to convert a secured A97 dbase into A2002 in a Windows XP
environment at home. My plan was to join the Windows XP workgroup
administrator with my own workgroup file that I copied from my office NT4
machine, take A97 securities off, convert, and re-do the securities in 2002.
However, Windows XP will tell me that I joint the workgroup, but actually
hasn't done anything. I tried it with the default workgroup administrator in
the system32 folder, and with my own created workgroup file named
SYSTEMTRNG. It doesn't ask me for a login, thus, it abvously doesnt do what
it said it did. Clearly, I'm locked out - no disaster because I'm fine at
work, but I would like to do the conversion over the weekend.
Any ideas.

Hi Brigitte,

You should open it in A97 and unsecure it there. Then convert to 2002 and
resecure.

Also it is possible to use a 97 mdw in a 2002 mdb.

Just join the 97 workgroup in Access 2002 (Tools, Security, workgroup
administrator). Open the 97 mdb and convert it.

Thanks Joan. When I join the workgroup in A2002, it says I'm joint, but it
doesn't recognize me (doesn't even ask me for login). A97 - I run both
successfully on the same machine in different folders - finally recognizes
me when I join the workgroup after I copied my own workgroupfile (created in
A97 - SYSTEMTRNG) into System 32, but I had to join several times before it
worked.
Unsecured databases converted fine; it's the secure stuff that give me fits
because A2002 doesn't really join me to the workgroup. Why? By the way, I
use Windows XP Media Edition (which is a strange animal).
I would prefer your second solution, that is join the STSTEMTRNG workgroup
in A2002, then open the A97 secured database in A2002 and allow the
conversion. After this I can fix the conversion issues that may come up.
What are I'm doing wrong? I appreciate your reply.

You may be getting confused, because in Access 97 when you are joined to a
secure mdw (one that requires a login), you are prompted for the login
before Access opens. In 2002 you are not - you'll see the Access
application window. It's only when you open or start a new database that
you'll get the login dialog.

Perhaps you could do the following instead:

Create a desktop shortcut with a target of

"path to 2002 msaccess.exe" "path to 97 mdb" /wrkgrp "path to 97 mdw"

That should open 2002, prompting you for a login, and then you'll get the
convert/open dialog. Choose to convert and you'll then be prompted for a
location and name for the 2002 version.

Once it's converted you can change the shortcut to
path to 2002 msaccess.exe" "path to 2002 mdb" /wrkgrp "path to 97 mdw"
