I removed the harddrive from a defunct e-machine and would like to install it
in a desktop gateway GT 5014 to recover existing files. Both hard drives were
and is window xp. The gateway has no cable that I can see to connect the
second harddrive. I can remove the cable from the e-machine (40 pins) and use
that to connect 2nd drive but not sure where to connect on mother board of
gateway. Do I just look for any empty slot that can accept the 40 pin
connector? If so what else do I need to transpose files to new pc? As you can
tell I am not a computer wiz. Thanks in advance

What you need Jock is an IDE cable with three connectors on it, your cable
plobably just has two, one either end, get an IDE cable with a connector in
the middle as well.

On the spare drive on the rear will be a jumper, make sure it is set to
slave, on the rear of the boot drive the jumper should be set master.

Plug one end into the motherboard, plug the middle cable into your spare
hard drive and the end of the cable into your main drive ( the boot drive).

Turn on your PC, open My Computer and Windows should have assigned the spare
drive a letter or letters if its partitioned and you can now access the files
on it by double clicking the drive.

thanks for the info andy: The problem is my gateway has a small connector on
each end. About the size of a usb connector. SATA? The second drive has a
large 40 pin connector slot.

In the new Gateway, the existing hard drive is plugged into the Primary IDE
controller (an assumption). Find out where the ribbon cable from the
CD/DVD-ROM drive is plugged in.

If it shares a cable with the existing hard drive, then you probably have an
available IDE port (the Secondary IDE controller) available on the
motherboard. If it plugs into the Secondary IDE controller, then you will
need to make a decision as to how you want to add the second drive.

If neither the Primary or Secondary ribbon cables have a second (unused)
40-pin connector, then you will need to go buy an IDE cable with two 40-pin
connectors.

Change the jumpers on the back of the old hard drive to a 'slave'
configuration. Attach the 'slave' to the second (unused) 40-pin connector
of the cable attached to the primary IDE controller. Alternatively, you
could change the jumper settings on the CD/DVD-ROM drive to a 'slave'
configuration, move it to the second (unused) 40-pin connector of the
Secondary IDE channel, then plug the first 40 pin connector into the old
drive, which should be configured as a 'master' by default.

Thank you carl. I have two cd drives connected via a double cable to the
mother board. I have the hard drive connected to the mother via a smaller
cable. There is an open 40 slot on the mother board not being used. Any idea
what this is? Can the second drive plug into this?

That is the second IDE connector, which should be adjacent to the one the
CD drives are already plugged into. Also, there a silkscreen on the MB that
tells you which one it is. They are usually marked IDE0 & IDE1, although I
have seen an oddball marked IDE1 & IDE2.

Yes, you can use the empty 40 pin connector and the cable from the eMachine.
Check the Samsung web site for jumper settings to set the old hard drive to
secondary primary.
If you don't plan on leaving the drive in the Gatway, you don't have to
physically install it to a drive bay, just place it on a non-metallic
surface. Disconnect cable from motherboard after retrieving the information
and after shutting down the computer.
You will need to access the BIOS and detect the drive, this usually
automatic.
