Searching Locks the Computer?

I have Windows 2000 Pro with all current patches. Open the search window,
and start to type the document I want to find, after the second character is
put in, the system freezes. THe only way to recover is to turn off.. Any
ideas?

How big and well organized is the volume that you are searching? Is the
indexing service enabled or disabled? Have you scandisk'd and defrag'd
recently?
