I have WinXP MCE 2003 for the first time via a laptop. I am very familiar
with anything PC. Here's my problem. I hear a ticking sound when I use
Windows search. I have Hanz as my search assistant as opposed to Merlin,
Rover, etc.

How do I get rid of the annoying ticking that occurs as it finds/searches my
computer? And yes, I did disbale all sounds via the control panel sound
effects section. Thank you in advance for your patience and time to respond.

Does the ticking sound seem like it's coming from your hard drive? If
so, this is not A Good Thing. Run a diagnostic utility on the drive
downloaded from the drive mftr.'s website. You will make a bootable
cd/floppy with the file you download. Boot with the media you created
and do a thorough test. If the drive fails any physical tests, replace
it.

In all the many, many times I've run Windows searches on various
machines I've never heard a ticking sound so I doubt it is the Search
program.

As 'Hanz' searches it ticks. No, it's not the HD definitely. I had it happen
before when I first got XP. I figured out, finally, over serval days how to
get rid of it, I just can't seem to recall how to do it again. I will keep
trying. Have a great day Malke.

Well, it's good news that "Hanz" is responsible for the noise and not your
hard drive. I'm sorry that I can't help you with "Hanz" because the first
thing I do on a Windows box is turn off the animated character. Better yet,
I install Agent Ransack which is a free search program that is far better
than XP's built-in one. Here's the link if you want to try it:

Yeah, as I hear... all their search companions have sound effects. Will look
at the link you'e suggested as well as turning them off completely. Again,
thanks and have a great one!!
