Here's the scenario :
When I right-click on a drive or folder in WinExplorer I get a message that
says "There was a problem sending the command to the program."

Greatful for any solutions, advice, ideas,...

A third-party shell extension could be to blame for this behaviour.
For information on shell extensions, where they are stored in the registry,
and how to control their loading see the following KB article
Q216384: "INFO: Approved Shell Extensions Only Enforced If
EnforceShellExtensionSecurity Key Is Turned On"
support.microsoft.com/?id=216384

Let me know if you can narrow it down to one shell extensions, or if you
eliminate this as a possible cause

Jason,
Thank you for the idea, but I am stumped. The KB article mentions where
approved shell extentions live and a security setting for them. Going to
where they live HKLM\Sw\Ms\Win\CrntVer\ShlExt\Approved, I found a long list,
among which I found :

{F020E586-5264-11d1-A532-0000F8757D7E} REG_SZ Directory Start/Search
Find

Now, this is the closest I came to matching or finding anything. I did a
search for the CLSID and it took me to
HKLM\Sw\Ms\Win\CrntVer\Expl\FindExtentions,
where nothing gives me an indication of what could be changed in order to
fix this.
This is the basic rundown of what is within (minus the hex ###s to shorten
the listing)

[\ShellFindInDirectory]
@="{F020E586-5264-11d1-A532-0000F8757D7E}"

[\Static]

[\Static\ShellSearch]
@="{169A0691-8DF9-11d1-A1C4-00C04FD75D13}"

[\Static\ShellSearch\0]
@="For &Files or Folders..."
"RunInProcess"="1"

[\Static\ShellSearch\0\DefaultIcon]
@=hex(2): ###s
"HotIcon"=hex(2): ###s
"GrayIcon"=hex(2): ###s

[\Static\ShellSearch\0\HelpText]
@="Search for files or folders"

[\Static\ShellSearch\0\SearchGUID]
@="{169A0691-8DF9-11d1-A1C4-00C04FD75D13}"

[\Static\ShellSearch\0\SearchGUID\UrlNavNew]
@=hex(2): ###s

What do I make out of this?

Thanks,
Alphonse

Let's table that method for a while.
Does the problem happen in Safe Mode?

Let's check the Run keys to disable startup apps to eliminate that as a
possible cause:
