Im using Vista Business. I go to search and search for a known file. It is
coming up empty. Any help please?

Are you sure that the file is in an indexed location of the system? Open
Control Panel > Indexing Options > Advanced and check of the location where
the file is stored so Vista will index the file. Try searching again from
the Start menu search field. Could you give us information on what type of
file format this is? .doc, .xl, .ppt for example?

same issue here. only solution i've found that works is to turn off
indexing. go to services.msc and stop and disable Indexing. THEN,
vista will find all your files. I hope gates and company fix this
nuisance with an update soon.

Turn off the indexing service!

A little history behind this dreaded thing on vista>>

Vista's search was based on desktop search, a program they made so they
could

fill in a hole created by Google desktop search...a competitor.

They then integrated this horrible piece of crap software inside VISTA and
turned on the indexing by default!

This is a big mistake.. since their software has too many problems.. is not
even a beta quality thing!

If you had ever tried the desktop search on XP you know how horrible this
is....

Also! They are not PUSHING this along with their windows Live downloadable
suite..

and guess what? They do not SAY that desktop search will be installed.. they
slide it in along the other programs you install
and suddenly you see your search has changed! WTF?

However this backfired on Microsoft since now they will have to change this
in service pack 1.

They will have to provide options for people to chose another desktop search
provider....

Also! They are **NOW** PUSHING this along with their windows Live
downloadable
suite..

Thanks for all your replies. I have now found out in advanced options i
have to enter c drive to let it search all over. BIG PAIN...
Thanks anyway

Can any of you assist me in turning off indexing service. I couldnt find
this in Davids post. I have found an inelegant solution and that is to
search the C Drive

go to the start orb, and type "services.msc". hit enter. that brings up
a window. find "Windows Search" in the list of services. it is set to
be on automatic. first turn it off. then "disable" it. close that
window. that's it!

Done and thanks
