Search problems - Help!

I have been trying to locate files on my computer. Going
to Start - Search brings up an IE window with Search
Companion bar along left side, but there is nothing in it,
just colored in. No way to change this that I have found,
other than closing Search companion, which leaves empty IE
window.

Any way to restore search function?
