Search problem

Whenever I search from the Search Command, I get the message "Searching. .
.." and the progress bar moves across the top of the window. This goes on
forever. Nothing is ever found.

When I go to the Control Panel; System and Maintenance; Indexing Options;
the message "Waiting to receive indexing status. . ." appears and the Modify
and Advanced boxes are shaded.

Search used to work as I have used it often. I was using it when it just quit.

No help. As I mentioned, when I go to the Indexing Options window, I get the
message "Waiting to receive indexing status. . ." appears, and the Modify
and Advanced boxes are shaded. The shaded boxes cannot be opened. This
message remains indefinitely.

I have the same exact problem. Service is running and can be stopped and
started cleanely. Even get some searching but the indexing doesnt appear to
address outlook or many other files (very incomplete). Not sure how to get
the Indexing Options screen to receive back a result. All help very welcome
as I had gotten pretty used to this service.

OK. I was able to recover my index options window with the following:

Stop the Windows Search Service
Open regedit, go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
Search, change SetupCompletedSuccessfully to 0
Start the Windows Search Service

I had this problem since I bought XPS with Office 2007. It goes on for 5-8
mins and locks up other activities. With my experience I have to wait until
the search is complete otherwise next time when my pc is on it starts
searching again! Realy annoying!

I changed SetupCompletedSuccessfully to 0 as Dave had suggested and then
searched for "indexing." Though it was still slow and locked other activities
as usual but at least it found some. See how fast the search from yahoo and
google is. Microsoft should provide a solution for this serious problem.
Any best advise from anyone? Thanks.

I would try opening "Computer", right click on the drive and uncheck the
box "Index this drive". That seems to solve a lot of problems here.

If you apply to all folders, subfolders and files it will take a while
to change permissions and you will have to ignore all for those it
cannot change, but you probably don't need to use that option.

I don't search for anything much, so all that indexing time is for me
quite useless, when I do search what is a few more seconds?
