Search problem

I have two computers,one running XP Media Centre and the other XP pro.
Yesterday when I came home from work I was unable to use the search button.
The column on the left just remained blank. I tried using the customise
option without result. My home page is MSN Sympatico and also has a search
option which again resulted in a blank page with "done" in the bottom left.

What could have happened to cause this and how can I correct?

My PC running Windows 98SE is just fine
