search options

I want to know what is the function of the "Match control characters" check
box, that occurs in the "Search Options" section in the Find and Replace
dialog box.

I don't have that option. What version of Word are you using?

It might be the equivalent of "Use wildcards" which enables a special set of
search operators. Without knowing what version of Word you're using,
however, it'd be hard to be sure.

I use Word 2007, and there is another option in the same section that is
called "Use wildcards"; so they are different options.

No, it is not. The search options I have are as follows:

Match case
Find whole words only
Use wildcards
Sounds like (English)
Find all word forms (English)
Match kashida (Arabic)
Match diacritics
Match alef hamza (Arabic)
Match control characters
Match prefix
Match suffix
Ignore punctuation characters
Ignore white-space characters

Match Control Characters is for bidirectional text control characters. You
only see the option (and several others) because you have Asian and complex
language support enabled but as you don't know what it is, I nonetheless
assume you are not working with such text and suspect you can safely ignore
it.
