Search not finding text in files

Hey all. I've been going through this newsgroups looking for posts similar
to the problems I'm having with the XP file search utility in that if I
search for files containing a specific text string, the file is never found.
Based on what I have read, it would appear that this behavior has something
to do with the lack of a PersistentHandler value for the type of file. Fair
enough, but what can I do if the file doesn't have a file extension? For
example, I need to find a specific string in all files named "Root" (no
extension - just Root ... and I know there are at least a couple files by
that name with the string I'm looking for). Do I need to resort to a third
party search utility? Can someone please tell me how to get this to work -
this feature (or lack thereof) is something I sorely miss after
transitioning off of 2000 to XP.

Thanks!

Hey that worked! Thanks a ton for the link.

Hello,

You can use method 2 from the below article to enable indexing of documents
with no extensions by telling the index server to "Index files with unknown
extensions"

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q309173

I tested it out and was able to toggle and find text within documents with
no extensions.
