I've lost search capability and am unable to access any
search engine websites. I've tried all fixes offered by
Medgirl (reset IE defaults, delete reg keys, download HBO
detection freeware, etc.), but still not working. Any
further advice?

Did you delete your hosts files? This site explains how to do it:

Basically I did a search for all hosts files (Start/Find/Files or Folders).
I then opened each of them using notepad to see what was in them. I found
probably three or four files that had long lists of all the search engines -
these are the files that were blocking those sites. I deleted those files.
You can rename them first to make sure you don't permanently delete
something you shouldn't.
