search hard drive for text in DOC files

I have Word 97 on Windows 2000 Pro. Is it possible to
search all closed .doc documents in a folder, or only open
ones? I could not see info on this searching the NG, nor
were any of my attempts successful in Word. Do I need a
3rd-party plug-in to do this?

Thank you for any help you can offer.

Windows 2000 can perform full-text searches using Start | Search.

Steve,

Are you saying you want to limit your search just to closed
files? Or just to open files?

If so, that's possible using a macro, though a bit involved.
Post back if that's what you need.

I'd like to search my hard drive for text in closed .doc
files. I'm not into using macros. Is there a 3rd party app
for this?

Thanks!

Does Windows Search not do what you want?

Well, well . . . yes it does! I thought it only searched
titles, not the internal text. Thank you for pointing this
out to me!
