Search function

At work and our windows search function seems to have changed overnight.
There is no way to choose which drive to search from. You cant right click
on a drive and go search.
The only options in the "look in" part are
:All digital media folders
:My Documents
:My Pictures
:My Music
:My Videos
esktop
:My Computer.

Now usually it has a browse option to search a specific drive or folder.
This has gone. I have gone to Advanced options and there is nothing there to
change drive. No settings in search have actually changed. Still on Service
Pack 1 as we are trialling Service Pack 2 for our corp apps. SP2 seems to be
fine but all others aren't working

If you are on a network, you might want to ask your IT department and other
users if this has been done deliberately. Losing the browse option is not
something you could have done accidentally.
Since the area you used to browse is contained within My Computer (at least,
it is on my machine), you should be able to find what you are searching for
using the My Computer option for now.

See the problem is that I am in the IT department so no It hasn't been done
by us. And nothing has changed in any group policy or anything like that , no
updates of any type. There are several users with this problem including my
PC. It shows the My computer option but doesn't expand like it normally does
for searching therefore attempting to search through our 15 or so network
drives that IT have access to will take forever. As a workaround I can type
in C: and it then adds it underneath My computer and so on with other network
drives. For our less computer literate users though this is a huge pain.

I use XP Home, but do not think there is much of a difference in this
regard. How annoying.

Losing the 'browse' option under 'Look in:' has been reported in these groups before....here's the first thread I found where someone says they were able to fix it:

Since that solution involves reinstalling 'Search', it will probably fix the missing context entry for the drives as well.

i tried reinstalling the schasst.inf as suggested in this post (i get a blank
blue area when i try to search) and a pop-up tells me i need 'msgr3en.dll'
and i need the svcpack2 CD. never had a CD, was downloaded from an update.

how do i get this file?
