Search Function Inoperative in XP

My search function does not work. After clicking Start
then Search a blank window opens. Usually search options
are displayed in the left window. Restarting the computer
did not help. Cancelling the search function in
customizing the start menu removes it OK, but selecting
it only brings back the blank window.

Can anyone help?
