Since upgrading my OS to XP Pro, I have not been able to do a SEARCH (using
Start>Search or Search from File Explorer) of a specific location. That is
if I want to do a search of C:/Windows/System32 I can not stipulate this in
the search criteria. The search function only allows me to select from
specific XP defined locations such as My Pictures, My Computer, My Videos
etc, there is no "Browse" selection that allows me to specific my own search
location.

It is V annoying as if I need to find something on my C drive, I can only
use the "My Computer" location, which takes for ever as it search network
drives etc etc.

I am sure there is a setting somewhere in XP that I am missing that will
allow me to specify my own search locations, but for the life of me I can't
find it.

Is there some genius out there who can help me out?

Cheers

Hi Dave

That's the whole problem, Browse is NOT in the drop down list. Any ideas?

Hi Glaze!
Open Explorer and go to the Windows\Inf folder. Locate
the srchasst.inf file. Right click it and select Install.
You'll need your XP CD or the files from the I386
folder. [ Win XP CD is required ]

The Windows\Inf folder is a hidden folder. You can adjust
your Explorer Folder Options (View tab) to Show hidden
files and folders. You can also click Start, Run and
enter %SystemRoot%\Inf to open directly to the Inf folder.

Hi!
Sorry! You wanted to know the location.

search for a file or folder
Click Start, and then click Search.
Click All files and folders.
Important

If you do not see All files and folders, you have
probably changed your default search behavior.

Click Change preferences.
Click Change files and folders search behavior.
Click Standard, and then click OK.
Click All files and folders.
Type part or all of the name of the file or folder, or
type a word or phrase that is in the file.
If you do not know either piece of information or want to
narrow your search further, select one or more of the
remaining options:
In Look in, click the drive, folder, or network you want
to search.
Click When was it modified? to look for files that were
created or modified on or between specific dates.
Click What size is it? to look for files of a specific
size.
Click More advanced options to specify additional search
criteria.
Click Search.
