For some reason, none of the online search engines (i.e.
lycos, google, yahoo, msn) work for me with XP. Is there
a setting that I don't know about?

Sounds like your computer is infected with the QHosts Trojan (virus). See http://vil.nai.com/vil/content/v_100719.htm, http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/trojan.qhosts.html, or other major antivirus web sites for details. You need to update your anti-virus program and run a complete system scan. There are also downloadable stand-alone cleaner tools for this, such as http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/trojan.qhosts.removal.tool.html from Symantec web site.
