search engines stop working, but AIM stil works

My computer model is the Satellite U205-S5002 running XP. I've been having
some internet issues for the past couple of months. Everything will be
working fine for a while, and then all of a sudden I will lose the connection
and websites wont load. It's strange, though, because when this happens, my
instant messaging (AIM) will still work, but I cant access anything with
Internet Explorer, Firefox, or AOL. So basically nothing but AIM will work,
and the only way I know how to resolve this is to restart the computer, which
gets frustrating. I'm thinking it's a problem with my computer itself and
not a problem with the internet service because I experience this with both
my internet at home (DSL) and at school (wireless). Any information or help
anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated!!!

When you have Internet service, but only some services work, check for LSP /
Winsock / TCP/IP corruption.

Thanks so much! I ran a few of the programs that checked for errors. My
problem occurred sporadically, so if everything works smoothly for a couple
of days I guess your solution worked! As of now, I'm pretty sure it DID work
because I've noticed improvements with another problem--my Windows Update
software stopped working around the same time my connectivity problem
started. And as soon I ran some of the tests/fixes you sent, Windows Update
instantly started to download the months of updates I missed! Thanks so much
again! I'm been trying to fix these problems for so long, and FINALLY
something worked :)
