Search Companion won't go away

Hello, i just updated my xp today and the next time i
opened IE the search companion window opened up on the
left hand side of my screen with a big advertisement to
support the Kerry campaign. I do not want to use any
search function and cannot find a way to stop this from
opening now. I can close it out all i want but it pops
back up when i click a new link. I've tried to disable it
but i cannot find anything about 'Change preferences' like
this artical says >

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maint
ain/xpmanaged/23_xpsch.mspx

The registry key that the artical says to change to 'no'
is not even under 'CabinetState' like it says.

Some people may like the search companion window occupying
1/4 of their screen but i find it very annoying. How can
i get rid of this????

Thank you.

you haven't installed lycos search assistant have you. go
in to add/remove programs and see if a entry is there to
uninstall what it is or run some antispyware like

ad-aware lavasoftusa.com
spybot safer-networking.org

update both before scan
