Search Companion window empty (except for dog)

Help! In my wife's profile (using XP), in IE, clicking
Search brings up the Search Companion window on the left
but nothing is in it but that dog. No box for entering
text. Also, the tool bar across the top of the window
just says Search Companion. What happened and how do I
fix it?
