To customise the Search Companion to your own individual needs, click the
“Change Preferences†link in the Search Results Window.
As well as changing the animated search character, other possibilities include
getting rid of the character all together, turning off the balloon tips or
altering the default files and folders search behaviour.

i appreciate the help,,,but i dont have an option to change prefrences,or change the character................its all gone my search is like classic search from 98, i had the dog but can seem to enable it.any clues? thank again
I never had win 98, so I have nothing to compare with win xp search companion, and I'm not sure what you mean by those things being 'gone', but I came accross this article a few days ago, and it may, or may not help. But this article pertains to blank boxes that should have something in them, like search preferences, ...that sort of thing. read it, it may help..
A dog is a man's best friend! So, you do need the doggy assistant. Open up
"Sear" from the Start menu. Click on the left pane (with the blue background
and tasks list). Then click on the Preferences link. Then choose "with an
animated screen character" and the dog will come back. To change the
character repeat those steps and click on "With a different character".
Hope I could help,
Dan.
