At some point in the past week the search companion has
stopped functioning. Earlier last week it worked, now it
doesn't. When I click on Start, Search the cursor spins
a bit and then... nothing.

I tried a repair installation, no results.

I've done a search using google for help, found many
people with similar problems but no answers that have
worked for me.

Help!!! (please)

Try this fix:

Ramesh, you are a genius. Your fix worked where all others have
failed. Many thanks.

(My problem was a non-existent search companion), after running your
fix its now back as new, thanks).
