Search bar on task bar

Attachments are permitted here though there is a maximun file size.

Malke said it was HP and I don't suppose there is an HP in the toolbar menu.
If not choose Advisor preferences and there should be an option there hidden
somewhere as Malke said.

I think you hit the nail on the head. But I opened the advisor and there
are no startup options to get rid of this thing ... that I can see. I went
into "General Settings" but had unchecked "launch HP Advisor automatically
on start-up" long ago. It doesn't get rid of that dreaded "mini window".
Nothing seems to apply. What am I missing?

I had opted not to have "HP Total Care Advisor" come up last week but the
dreaded search "mini window" still comes up!

maybe in all your playing around you've messed it up a little so it is no
longer working as designed....I don't know, I'm just guessing that might
have happened and I'm not being critical.

You could perform a system restore to get your computer back to how it was
before you started digging around then attack it again now that you know
where to focus.

I don't know what you're missing because I don't have a new HP laptop
here to take a look. All I can tell you is that the option to show/not
show the Yahoo search bar is somewhere (probably buried) in one of the
many parts of this PC Health Center - I think. I know you can disable it
because I did it. I'm sorry but I can't tell you exactly where. It might
not even be in that PC Health thing but I *know* it was preinstalled by
HP and disabling it is not in an intuitive place. I just did a bit of
creative Googling and can't find anything except news reports that HP
made a lucrative agreement with Yahoo.

So I'm sorry but you'll just have to search harder. You can do it! If
worst comes to worst, call up HP tech support.

Oh, anything but that (calling support again)! <lol> I went into Windows
Explorer and found the HP Advisor folder. Under it there is a file named
"HPadvisor.exe.config". What should I use to open that? I fear doing
anything without advice. Just afraid to foul something up. Is that indeed
the place I need to change?

That's not the place, so don't bother. It is an option that is simple to
use and it clearly refers to the Yahoo Search Bar - I just don't
remember where I found it.

Ignore my last post - I persisted with Google and I believe I have found
your answer. The setting is coming from the HP Advisor toolbar. This is
what I found from Google:

Control Panel>Taskbar>Start Menu>Toolbars - Uncheck HP Advisor.

but that doesn't make sense to me. Try just right-clicking on an empty
area of the Taskbar and then choose Toolbars - slide your cursor over to
the right and uncheck the HP (or Yahoo) entry. Then if HP Advisor shows
up in the Control Panel "Programs & Features" you could uninstall it if
you want. I don't know what else HP Advisor does and you might want to
keep it.

It's a/ what I said, and b/ both directions do the same thing. Taskbar and
Start menu (not Taskbar then Start menu) has a new toolbar tab in Vista
duplicating the menu.

Oh, my gosh. It was something as simple as that?! Boy is my face red. I
can't believe it. I guess my problem all along has been that I was looking
for something relating to Yahoo when in fact it was the HP advisor all this
time. I don't really want to uninstall the advisor since I do think it
might be helpful. (The jury is out on that yet.) However I hated that
invasive search bar on the bottom. I put all my shortcuts along the taskbar
so I don't have them on my desktop. Keeps the desktop uncluttered that way.

I see both of your methods work. I wonder though if it will come back once
I reboot.

I want to thank you in abundance! I know it was a little thing in the
scheme of life but it was just bugging me!

You could re-size it if it is too big

Try this: right click on the start button (I dunno what it's called in XP) go to the properties area, click the Toolbar tab, and uncheck HP advisor. Worked for me...
